I'm running for Metro President...to lead our region effectively into a stronger future. Metro makes fundamental decisions affecting the 25 cities, 3 counties, and 1.5 million residents in this great community, including:

  • How will we better support our region’s businesses to create more jobs? How will we improve the predictability of travel time from one place to another?
  • How will we reduce global warming pollution from cars and trucks as our region grows? How will we avoid sprawl and protect nearby farmland and forests, rivers and water quality, and livable neighborhoods?
  • This is my home. I was born here. And for most of the last 35 years I’ve been working and fighting to protect the land and communities of Oregon and this region by turning growth and development from adestructive force to a creative one.

We have so much to be proud of, and so much to protect, for the families already here, for our children who want to remain or come back, and for the talented newcomers who share our love for this place.

I hope you’ll join my campaign to help choose the right decisions for our unique region, those that strengthen our home, not compromise it.

Here's what regional leaders say about Bob:

Congressman Earl Blumenauer

"Metro government is unique nationally and, as such, requires unique leadership. To design the profile, it would be hard to imagine anyone better qualified than Bob Stacey. He’s not a politician, but there is no one with Bob’s combination of public and private sector experience, policy and administrative background at the federal, state, regional, and local level. Because of his experience, his competence, his intelligence and the fact that he's a great human being, I am happy to support Bob Stacey for Metro President."

Dick and Nancy Ponzi - Ponzi Vineyards, Washington County

"As one of the pioneering Oregon wine families, we have witnessed and participated in the successful effort to protect the beauty and bounty of this distinctly rich state. Bob Stacy has been there every step of the way, working long and hard, from the outside and the inside, leading the effort to save our land use laws. He continues the effort at all levels of government in the collaborative Oregon style, working with farmers, industrialists, winemakers, urban residents and politicians. Protecting the rural land of our valleys is inherent to agriculture. The fact is, without the protection of our farmlands and hillsides, there would be no wine industry here. Every Oregonian has benefited from Bob and will continue to benefit with Bob Stacey as Metro President. He has the energy and know how to continue protecting our quality of life."

Steve Novick - Community Leader

"Bob knows that land use policy is about creating and preserving walkable and bikeable communities, with a range of transportation options … which will help fight global warming, protect us from the high gas prices of the future, and help prevent childhood (and adult, for that matter) obesity. Even if you never saw a farm or forest that you didn’t want to burn to the ground, you have a stake in policies that will help ensure that twenty years from now, we aren’t spending all our money on gas and health care, in a planet that’s frying like a grilled cheese sandwich."

Lenny Anderson, Project Director, Swan Island TMA

Member, Governors' I-5 Task Force 2000-2002

"I like it that Bob Stacey can count...he understands that doubling the number of travel lanes across the Columbia River in the I-5 corridor will increase greenhouse gas emissions and dump up to 100,000 more vehicle trips into north Portland neighborhoods."

Larry Duyck - Washington County Farmer

"My family has been farming in Washington County for over a century, and Bob Stacey’s work to protect our area’s farm and forestland means that we should be able to farm for the next century as well. Bob understands how important it is to ensure that people who live in urban and suburban areas have close access to nature and open spaces, while protecting local agriculture and the ability to eat things grown right here. That makes our part of Oregon special, and you can count on Bob Stacey to protect it."

Lynn Peterson - Clackamas County Chair

"As the chair of the Clackamas County Commission, I am proud to know and support Bob Stacey to serve as president of our Metro region. Metro encompasses 28 jurisdictions - cities and counties - and a big part of its job is to help us to work together, to get improvements made, and to do the right thing even when it's controversial. Bob is a perfect candidate for Metro president - he has worked in four levels of government and in the private sector; he cares passionately about protecting livable neighborhoods and ensuring new growth is smart; and he is simply the consummate diplomat - able to work with all kinds of people, businesses and organizations. We will be lucky to elect such a quality person to this important job"

Don and Darlene Carlson - Portland Retirees

"We've spent our lives in this area - working and raising our family - and now we're retired here. As active retirees, we appreciate walkable neighborhoods in which we can get around and meet our needs easily and safely. We support Bob Stacey for Metro President: He has already helped our local neighborhoods remain friendly to older people and we know he'll keep that commitment into the future."

Jim Kelly - Founder Rejuvenation

"We founded Rejuvenation in 1977 and have worked hard to provide local jobs and assist individuals with their homes and businesses. Our unique community helps to retain businesses like ours - because we can count on new customers with families locating here. But we can only continue to thrive if our local elected leaders can turn their attention to the daily needs of small businesses like ours and not get seduced by costly marquis projects that have short term glitter but lack the staying power of a bevy of small, local employers. Bob Stacey will be the kind of elected leader we can count on to protect what we've got and make room for the next generation."

Leslie Carlson - Portland Mother of Three

"I was raised in this community and now my husband and I are   raising our kids here, too. That is why we support Bob. He will focus Metro on giving us choices that actually make a difference in our lives: enough good jobs close to home, being able to get around easily, and neighborhoods that are safe, livable and convenient, With 3 kids in our local school, we really appreciate Bob’s insistence that good schools be a part of our region’s plans for the future."

Caitlin Baggot - Youth Leader

"Young voices matter in our community. That’s one reason I’m involved in the Oregon Bus Project, where we reach out to youth to get involved in the political process. I am really excited about Bob Stacey running for Metro President: Bob has a track record of dedication to involving citizens in making our community better. With Bob, it’s not about what he can do, it’s about what we can do. Metro has a big impact on how we will live our lives in the future, and Bob Stacey will make sure that our voices are heard too."

Mike Houck - Urban Conservationist

I believe Bob Stacey, in his role as President of the Metro Council, will continue Metro's collaborative efforts to ensure that the 1903 Olmsted vision of a comprehensive, interconnected system of parks, trials, and natural areas for the City of Portland, is implemented throughout the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region.

Ethan Seltzer - Urban Studies Professor

"I've know Bob for almost 30 years. During that time he has been a passionate advocate for Oregon and for the very reasons that this place is unique. He understands the people. As our region grows, I want the commitment, passion and experience of Bob Stacey working on behalf of our region."

Sybil Ackerman - Conservation Leader

"If you care about protecting Oregon's unique farmland, forests, rivers and streams, Bob Stacey is your pick for Metro President. I have known Bob personally for many years and I can tell you that he knows more about protecting natural areas in our region than anyone else I know. He is the right pick for Metro President .... period. "
